Hearts of Palm
Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op is happy to now carry Native Forest Organic Hearts of Palm. This product is harvested in a responsible and renewable manner, from a special preserve where native rainforest is protected, and where the selected wild Euterpe palms grow back. According to the Native Forest product information, "Employment is provided for indigenous natives in the rainforest region [in Guyana] who have learned how, where, and when to cut the plants to maintain and repopulate the palm species."

Each week in September (while the season lasts), our deli manager, Chris Parkhurst, orders salmon on Tuesday, it's caught on Wednesday, and it arrives here on Thursday. He's making salmon cakes with remoulade sauce for this tasting, accompanied by Boylan's lemon seltzer. Don't miss it!

  Happy Organics Month!

Go Organic!

September is Organics Month, and people all across the country are thinking about what this means to them, as well as their families, their communities, their planet.

But many people are still asking, "What is 'organic'?"

According to the National Organic Program:

"Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled 'organic,' a government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too."

For more information, see the National Organic Program and the Organic Consumer Association websites.

Free "Food for Life" classes this fall

NOTE: Although these classes are currently full, we have a waiting list, so please sign up if you like. We will call you if we have an opening. We also may offer this series again, so please let us know if you're interested!

“Food for Life” is a series of eight free nutrition and cooking classes that introduce you to a delicious, healthy lifestyle designed to keep cancer at bay. Launched in 2001 by The Cancer Project, a program of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the classes were designed by physicians, nutritionists and dieticians to help cancer survivors take advantage of the healing power of foods. Each class includes information about how certain foods and nutrients work to discourage the growth of cancer, along with demonstrations of simple, healthy recipes that you can make easily at home.

The classes are held each Tuesday evening (9/18 – 11/6) from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Whether you're a cancer survivor or just want to boost your health, these classes will offer great "food for thought."

To get on the waiting list: info@roanokenaturalfoods.coop or call RNFC at 343-5652. For more information, see The Cancer Project and "cooking classes" at www.cancerproject.org.
