| October is Fair Trade Month |
This month, we celebrate fair trade around the world. Products that carry the Fair Trade certification label are guaranteed to have been grown and traded in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
Every time you buy a Fair Trade-certified product, you directly contribute to the prosperity and well-being of farmers, their families and communities worldwide as well as the earth itself. |
Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op is proud to carry a variety Fair Trade-certified products. Look for the symbol when you shop.

October is also National Co-op Month, which means that co-ops around the country do what they can to help each other. On Saturday, October 27, we honor Howard Bowers Day, on which a 1% of our total sales will be donated to the Howard Bowers Fund. |
Howard Bowers was a respected leader in the national cooperative community who spent his life helping cooperatives grow and prosper. The fund established in his memory helps new or expanding food co-ops grow. Please join us in supporting this good cause.

| Fall Waterways Cleanup & Celebration a success |
Thank you, Fall Waterways Cleanup volunteers!
Many thanks to more than 800 hardy volunteers across the Roanoke Valley, who came out on a damp Saturday morning on October 6 and cleaned streams, creeks, and the Roanoke River! It was the biggest crowd of cleaner-uppers ever, and 500+ of them came to Wasena Park afterward to celebrate, eat a free lunch (courtesy of the co-op and Roanoke City Parks and Recreation), and enjoy bluegrass music by The Black Twigs. The co-op team, led by Patrick Beale and Bob Morris, was so big they became two teams!

RNFC is proud to be one of the sponsors of this fun and important event. Other sponsors include Clean Valley Council and its partners, DCR (Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation), DEQ (Virginia Department of Environmental Quality), Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, Orvis, Roanoke City Parks and Recreation, Roanoke County Parks and Recreation, Tom’s of Maine, Town of Vinton, Upper Roanoke River Roundtable, West Pharmacy and Western Virginia Water Authority. Many thanks to Tom's of Maine, who donated trash bags and gloves. |
If you weren’t able to join us this year, please come to the next cleanup, October 4, 2008. Our beautiful waterways will thank you . . . |
