Fall Waterways Cleanup and Celebration

Thanks to all our volunteers and organizing partners who worked so hard for our Fall Waterways Cleanup and Celebration on Saturday, October 7. Over 770 people signed up to clean waterways around the valley. The Co-op's team adopted Ghent Hill Park under Memorial Bridge, and made quick work of the area.

After the cleanup, a couple hundred hearty folks who didn't mind the cold and damp came out to the picnic at Wasena Park for lunch provided by the Co-op, Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, and City of Roanoke.

 October is Co-op Month!

Everyone Benefits – The World of Co-ops
People band together to form cooperatives all over the world. And there's no limit to what co-ops can do—build homes, purchase products and services, share utilities, even provide funeral services and organize orchestras.

Did you know?
1. There are more than 3,000 farmer-owned cooperatives in the U.S.
2. More than 50,000 families in the U.S. use cooperative day-care centers, giving co-ops a crucial role in the care of our children.
3. Two million U.S. households receive telephone service from telephone cooperatives across the country.
4. More than half the electrical lines in America are operated by rural electric cooperatives, providing electricity to 37 million people.
5. There are 84 million members of credit unions in the United States.
6. More than 6,400 housing cooperatives exist in the U.S., providing 1.5 million homes.

Co-ops are good for their communities.
In fact, concern for community is a cooperative principle. Natural food co-ops support local economies with their commitment to providing local food and products. They contribute to community causes by sponsoring events such as local concerts, fairs, and food drives, to name just a few. And co-ops support the global community, too, by buying Fair Trade products and offering support to one another.

Cooperatives at Work
Around the world, 800 million people belong to cooperatives, and more than 100 million of them are employed by cooperatives. Co-ops are a vital part of the global economy, buying and selling a surprising variety of products and services.

Co-op Principles
In addition to our common values, most co-ops share seven basic principles. These principles help co-ops maintain the spirit of cooperation, and they demonstrate how people-oriented cooperatives are at heart:

First Principle:  Voluntary and Open Membership

Second Principle:  Democratic Control

Third Principle:  Member Economic Participation

Fourth Principle:  Autonomy and Independence

Fifth Principle:  Education, Training and Information

Sixth Principle:  Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Seventh Principle:  Concern for Community
