These Participating Businesses have made special offers to the owners of our cooperative because they share our vision of a strong local economy. We ask that you shop these stores and services frequently and share your experience with us at the Co-op. While Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op assumes no responsibility or liability for the quality of services provided by the participants, we would like to continue to grow and improve the program and to do so we will need your input.
If you are not currently an owner but would like information about ownership, please check out page 16 of the booklet.

| Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010 |
Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010
We had planned to include information about Senator John McCain’s
bill called The Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010. The bill, as it
was written, threatened to repeal key sections of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). DSHEA protects supplements if
1) they are food products that have been in the food supply and not chemically altered or
2) if they were sold as supplements prior to 1994, the year that DSHEA was passed.
If a supplement fits one of these two descriptions, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot arbitrarily ban it or reclassify it as a drug.
Thanks to a huge response from consumers pouring hundreds of thousands of messages into the Senate, the bill as written is now dead. On March 4th, Senator McCain met with Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a champion of natural medicine, and told him that he is withdrawing support for his own bill.
However, it is doubtful that this is the last we will see of supplement reform in the Senate. We will need to see if McCain will try to offer some modified version of the bill.
