Local ground beef
RNFC now carries local, natural ground beef from The Bright Farm in Floyd. All the beef is raised by Larry and Debby Bright, without added hormones or antibiotics, on chemical-free pastures.

African honey
We also carry Zambezi Organic Forest Honey from Zambia. This pure, raw, fair-trade honey is sustainably harvested by 5,000 traditional beekeepers. Started by a pair of Peace Corps volunteers, the company gives a portion of profits for Zambian community projects. For more information: www.zambezihoney.com

“Locavore” is the word of the year

“Locavore”

“The New Oxford American Dictionary chose locavore, a person who seeks out locally produced food, as its word of the year. The local foods movement is gaining momentum as people discover that the best-tasting and most sustainable choices are foods that are fresh, seasonal, and grown close to home.

Some locavores draw inspiration from the 100-mile diet or from advocates of local eating like Barbara Kingsolver. Others just follow their taste buds to farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture programs, and community gardens. . . .”

Local film to air January 17

“Down in the Old Belt: Voices from the Tobacco South”

On Thursday, January 17, at 9 p.m., PBS station WBRA-TV will broadcast “Down in the Old Belt,” the award-winning documentary on tobacco by local filmmaker Jim Crawford.

Awarded Best Documentary Film at the Appalachian Film Festival in 2006, “Down in the Old Belt” traces the history of tobacco in Virginia, from the founding of Jamestown to the recent buyout program, and the culture that has grown up around it. Crawford wrote, produced and directed the film, interviewed 26 farmers, and played the guitar on the soundtrack along with many local musicians.

If you miss it on TV this time around, it’s available at the co-op in the book section for $29.95.

  Parking reminder

We're tight on space!

As you know, parking in Grandin Village is limited.
You may not be aware that the Co-op owns the parking lot adjacent to its building and that lot is not a public parking area.

Please remember that our parking lot is for our customers’ use only when they are shopping in the Co-op. Effective immediately, we will strictly enforce our towing policy. The towing company has been given instruction to tow the car of anyone not entering the Co-op or, upon exiting the Co-op, leaving their car in our lot and going elsewhere. It’s essential that the few parking spaces we own are available for you to use when you shop at the Co-op.

Thank you for understanding.

General Manager
