| Cooperation in Motion |
These are exciting times for the Co-op!
In our first issue we introduced you to the seven internationally recognized cooperative principles, guides that cooperatives across the world voluntarily follow:
• Voluntary and Open Membership
• Democratic Control
• Member Economic Participation
• Autonomy and Independence
• Education, Training and Information
• Cooperation Among Cooperatives
• Concern for Community

Here at Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op we have been operating as a cooperative - in spirit - since our inception in the 1970s. Our plans this year - to switch to a patronage rebate system and to reincorporate as a consumer cooperative - will put us closer in line with the principles we endeavor to uphold. Let’s take a look at the first four principles.
• Voluntary and Open Membership
Definition: Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.
How that looks here: We have always welcomed anyone to join us. The responsibilities of membership will change with the reincorporation, because people will then buy refundable shares in the Co-op, instead of paying a non-refundable yearly membership fees.
• Democratic Control
Definition: Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. One member, one vote. Men and women serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership.
How that looks here: Each member-owner (both Lifetime and Yearly) has had the right to vote in elections and represent the membership on the Board of Directors. Once we have reincorporated as a consumer cooperative, the yearly membership program will end. We will then sell shares in the Co-op, and all shareholders - or owners - will have equal voting rights and responsibilities.
• Member Economic Participation
Definition: Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative. At least part of that capital is usually the common property of the cooperative. They usually receive limited compensation, if any, on capital subscribed as a condition of membership. Members allocate surpluses for any or all of the following purposes: developing the cooperative, possibly by setting up reserves; benefiting members in proportion to their transactions with the cooperative; and supporting other activities approved by the membership.
How that looks here: Our physical assets have been controlled by the cooperative as a whole. The future reincorporation of the Co-op will allow the members to contribute equitably to the cooperative by purchasing shares. They will continue to have democratic control over the Co-op’s common property.
Individually, they will then benefit in proportion to their transactions with the Co-op in the form of their patronage rebate. Collectively, they will all benefit from the sustained growth of the Co-op, which will result in an increase of goods and services.
• Autonomy and Independence:
Definition: Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain their cooperative autonomy.
How that looks here: In the past, we have relied heavily on loans to keep the business running. Both our reincorporation to a consumer cooperative and shift to a patronage rebate system will allow us to retain capital, build reserves, and sustainably plan for our future. We will become more autonomous and independent, relying on ourselves for our future needs and growth.
